Mercane WideWheel Pro Electric Scooter Review

After spending several weeks with the Mercane WideWheel Pro, I feel well-equipped to share a comprehensive review of this unique electric scooter. It's a machine that prioritizes stability and power, all packaged within a futuristic design that certainly draws attention.

Design and Build Quality

First impressions of the WideWheel Pro are of its robust and sturdy frame. The scooter's aluminum construction instills confidence with its quality finishes. As the name promises, the wide wheels are a distinctive feature that not only contribute to its aesthetic but also provide a stable ride. The folding mechanism is solid, giving a reassuring click when locked into riding position. However, it's worth noting that at approximately 54 pounds, this isn't the most portable option out there.

Performance

Turning to performance, the WideWheel Pro is powered by dual 500W motors that collectively provide 1000W of power, which can peak up to 1600W when tackling steep inclines or when you need that extra boost. The scooter has phenomenal torque, making uphill climbs feel effortless.

The top speed of around 26 mph is exhilarating, and it's there that the wide wheels truly shine, offering unmatched stability compared to narrower options. Acceleration is smooth thanks to the improved throttle, which provides a level of control I've found lacking in other scoots.

One cannot review the WideWheel Pro without mentioning its unique suspension. With foam-filled airless tires, you won't be dealing with punctures. That said, while these tires absorb bumps rather well, they don't provide the same level of comfort as pneumatic tires, especially on rougher surfaces.

Battery Life and Range

Mercane claims a range of up to 22 miles on a single charge under optimum conditions. In my experience, while commuting in a city with occasional hills and quick stops, the range was slightly less but still impressive. It's important to account for rider weight, terrain, and riding style when considering battery performance.

Charging time, on the other hand, is a bit lengthy. Expect to wait about 8 hours for a full charge from empty, so overnight charging is your best bet.

Riding Experience

The WideWheel Pro's deck provides ample foot space, adding to the sense of stability. The low center of gravity helps in maneuvering, albeit the scooter isn't as nimble as some of its counterparts due to its weight and width. Nevertheless, the ride is thrilling, and the scooter feels incredibly planted, even at higher speeds.

The LCD display is straightforward and clearly shows speed, battery level, and ride mode. It's a breeze to toggle between the Eco and Power modes, greatly altering the riding experience and managing battery consumption efficiently.

If there's an area that could use some improvement, it would be the braking. Although the WideWheel Pro comes with dual disc brakes, which are a significant upgrade from the previous version's single rear brake, the initial bite feels a bit soft. Once engaged fully, they're powerful, but I would have preferred a more immediate response.

Additional Features

One cannot conclude without mentioning the built-in lights. The front LED provides basic visibility, but for night rides, extra lighting would be advisable. The rear brake light is a useful safety feature, but again, more lumens wouldn't hurt.

The scooter also includes a key ignition, which is a welcome security feature, adding an extra layer of theft deterrence.

Final Thoughts

The Mercane WideWheel Pro is an electric scooter that doesn't blend into the crowd — it stands out. It manages to combine rugged design, powerful performance, and solid build quality. Its stability is unparalleled, but this comes with the trade-off of reduced portability and a ride that might be harsher on poor road conditions.

This scooter is ideal for someone looking for a stable, powerful commuter scooter and who doesn't mind a longer charge time or a less plush ride in exchange for durability and a puncture-proof experience.

In summary, with my weeks spent on the WideWheel Pro, I can confidently say it delivers on its promises, making it a worthwhile investment for the right rider. The sublime balance of speed and stability, alongside its striking design, makes it a compelling option in the crowded electric scooter market.

Update After Six Months of Riding

Six months later, the Mercane WideWheel Pro continues to be a mostly positive experience, albeit with a few notable caveats. The durability of the construction is commendable; despite extensive use, the frame and mechanical parts have held up very well, showing minor wear and tear.

The range has slightly diminished over time, which is not uncommon with electric scooters. Proper maintenance of the battery has mitigated this issue to an extent, but it's still noticeable when compared to the first few months of use.

One area that has proven a bit problematic is the fixed airless tires which, while avoiding punctures, have not been the most comfortable on the harsher terrains of an urban landscape. The ride can feel especially rough over unpaved paths or older, cracked pavements.

Additionally, the weight of the scooter continues to affect its portability. While the solid build is appreciated during rides, it can be cumbersome when transporting it over longer distances by hand, such as when taking it up stairs or loading it into a vehicle.

Yet, for all these issues, the WideWheel Pro's performance in terms of power and stability still makes it a fantastic option for those looking for a robust, commuter-friendly scooter. The thrill of riding it remains intact, and the stability and power it offers are hard to match.

For any potential buyer, it's a matter of weighing these factors and deciding if the WideWheel Pro aligns with their specific needs and environment. The scooter still stands out for its design and build quality and continues to be a reliable option for my daily commutes.
