Razor E175 Electric Scooter Review

If you're considering purchasing an electric scooter for your child, the Razor E175 may have caught your eye. Equipped with a kid-sized frame, intuitive controls, and a modest motor, this scooter is designed as a gateway to motorized rides for children aged 8 and up. In this review, I'll navigate you through all its features, performance, and overall value to help you decide if the E175 is the right choice for your young rider.

Key Features:

  • Motor and Speed: A 24V sealed lead acid rechargeable battery system powers the E175's 100-watt, chain-driven motor. It's capable of reaching speeds up to 10 mph, offering the right balance between thrill and control.

  • Ride Time: When fully charged, the scooter provides up to 40 minutes of continuous use. That's a decent amount of ride time for kids to enjoy a trip around the park or a short commute to school.

  • Build Quality: With an all-steel frame and fork, the E175 promises durability. This robust construction ensures that the scooter can withstand the rigors of daily play and last for several years, potentially serving younger siblings too.

  • Wheels: The front wheel features an 8-inch pneumatic tire that helps soften the ride over bumps and uneven surfaces. The rear wheel, however, is made from 125mm polyurethane, which is a common choice for scooters but doesn't provide the same level of shock absorption.

  • Braking: A hand-operated, front brake gives the rider reliable stopping power. The brake's placement and the simple mechanics make it easy for young riders to quickly learn how to slow down and stop safely.

Performance and Handling:

The Razor E175 provides a smooth ride with a twist-grip acceleration control that is straightforward for kids to use. Beginners will appreciate the kick-start feature, which requires manual scooting before the motor engages, giving them a chance to balance first. The combination of a pneumatic front tire and a low torque motor makes for a ride that is forgiving for those who are just learning the ropes of electric scooting.

While the E175 doesn't boast the power or speed of higher-end models, it's not intended to. It's a sensible choice for kids who aren't ready to handle the more intense speed of Razor's more robust offerings. The weight limit is capped at 120 pounds, so it's truly tailored to the younger demographic.

Design and Build:

The design of the E175 is typical of Razor's line, with a straightforward red or pink color scheme and no-nonsense aesthetic. The deck is of a good size for children to stand on comfortably, and the controls are ergonomically positioned. The build quality stands out in particular; the steel construction exudes confidence in its ability to take a beating from exuberant kids.

Battery Life and Charging:

Charge time is an important consideration for electric scooters, and the E175 needs about 12 hours to charge fully, which may require some planning. The 40-minute run time can seem short, but it's plenty for a child's play session or errands around the neighborhood.

Safety and Usability:

Razor has built the E175 with safety in mind. The speed is capped at a reasonable level to ensure young riders aren't overwhelmed, and the brake system is easy to engage. It's worth noting that the E175 lacks some of the advanced safety features found in pricier models, such as lights or reflectors, so it's best used during the daytime or in well-lit areas.

Conclusion:

The Razor E175 is a solid electric scooter for kids that combines a safe speed, respectable battery life, and robust build quality. It's a fantastic way to introduce youngsters to electric rides, providing enough power for fun without compromising on safety.

However, as kids grow and develop their riding skills, they might outgrow the E175's capabilities quite quickly. If you're looking for an electric scooter that packs a little more punch or has a longer battery life, Razor's lineup includes other models that might fit the bill. But for beginners and younger kids, the E175 offers an excellent balance of fun, control, and peace of mind for parents. It gets the job done and does it well at this price point.

Update After 6 Months of Ownership:

Having owned the Razor E175 electric scooter for over half a year, we've had ample time to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses in a real-world setting. Here's what we've discovered:

Positives:

  1. Durability: True to its design, the E175 has proven highly durable. Despite frequent use, it shows minimal wear and tear, showcasing its ability to withstand the enthusiastic play of children.

  2. Ease of Use: The simple controls remain user-friendly for children, fostering independence and confidence in young riders as they continue to use the scooter regularly.

Negatives:

  1. Battery Life: As anticipated, the 40-minute run time can be limiting. While sufficient for quick rides, it sometimes falls short for longer outings, leading to a bit of disappointment when the fun ends abruptly.

  2. Charge Time: The long charge time continues to require planning, which can be a logistical nuisance, particularly if multiple children are sharing the scooter.

Overall, the Razor E175 has been a delightful addition to our outdoor activities. While not without its flaws, particularly with battery management, it continues to provide a reliable and safe form of entertainment and transportation for children. Its value shines through in its construction and the joy it brings to its riders.
